Zusammenfassung
Diesem Artikel liegt die Masterarbeit „Strategien für die städtebauliche Entwicklung von informellen Siedlungen“ (Nowara 2017) zugrunde, in welcher die aktuellen Upgrading Areas von Kibera (Kenia) und San Juan de Miraflores (Peru) untersucht und die dort angewandten Upgrading-Maßnahmen gegenübergestellt wurden. Slum Upgrading wird als eine „Urbane Entwicklungs- und Erneuerungsstrategie zur Verbesserung von Slums und informellen Siedlungen“ definiert. Ein Slum Upgrading besteht immer aus mehreren Maßnahmen und betrifft physische, soziale, ökonomische, ökologische und organisatorische Bereiche einer Siedlung. Somit handelt es sich um einen schwerwiegenden Eingriff in die Siedlungsstruktur und das Leben der Bewohner (Cities Alliance 2016).
