Die Richtung des Lesens hängt von der Art der Zahlendarstellung auf dem Computer ab. Es wird zwischen MSB first und LSB first unterschieden. MSB steht dabei für Most Significant Bit, also für das Bit mit der höchsten Wertigkeit, und LSB für Least Significant Bit. Das LSB steht immer für das Bit, das die Einerstelle repräsentiert. Dies ist besonders dann relevant, wenn Zahlen zwischen verschiedenen Computersystemen ausgetauscht werden sollen, die eine unterschiedliche Zahlendarstellung nutzen.
