Seit dem 1.1.2014 gelten die Emissionsvorschriften gemäss Tier4-final in den USA und Stufe IV in der EU (siehe Tabelle 1). Die Bedeutung der neuen, tieferen Grenzwerte für den ganzen Entwicklungsprozess des Antriebstrangs ist tiefgreifend und schliessen neben den mechanischen und elektronischen Komponenten, auch Softwaretools und -Methoden ein.
