Zusammenfassung
Bei der vollständigen Verbrennung eines nur aus C‐ und H‐Atomen bestehenden, sogenannten CxHy‐Brennstoffes enthält das Abgas die Komponenten Sauerstoff (O2), Stickstoff (N2), Kohlendioxid (CO2) und Wasserdampf (H2O). Bei der realen Verbrennung treten zusätzlich zu diesen Bestandteilen auch die Produkte der unvollständigen Verbrennung Kohlenmonoxid (CO) und unverbrannte Kohlenwasserstoffe (HC) sowie die unerwünschten Nebenprodukte Stickoxide (NOx) und Partikel auf. Im Gegensatz zu den durch den Gesetzgeber limitierten Abgaskomponenten wird das CO2 nicht als Schadstoff angesehen, da es keine direkte Gefahr für die Gesundheit des Menschen darstellt und als Endprodukt jeder vollständigen Oxidation eines Kohlenwasserstoffs auftritt. Im Folgenden werden die Entstehungsmechanismen der oben genannten Schadstoffe beschrieben sowie inner‑ und nachmotorische Methoden zur Reduktion dieser Stoffe dargestellt.
