In klassischen Theorien der Erkenntnis hatte ein Beobachter selbst für Erkenntnis zu sorgen. Er mochte sich einer hochkomplexen, teilweise intransparenten Welt gegenübersehen. Für ihn konnte es religiöse Gründe geben, die seiner Neugier Grenzen zogen.
