Abstract
Diagnostic competency is a key prerequisite for successful teaching in diverse learning groups and for providing individualized learner support. The present study examined the effects of a cooperative learning environment (problem-based learning with text-based cases, PBL-TC) on the development of individual diagnostic competency in teacher training students. We expected PBL-TC to have a positive effect on knowledge about diagnostics, motivation and the self-concept. To test these hypotheses we conducted a quasi-experimental study with two measurement points with 57 and 45 students, respectively. The intervention group worked in small PBL-groups with text-based cases and the control group with instruction based lessons. Repeated-measures ANOVAs showed a significant interaction effect on the students‘knowledge about diagnostics and the self-concept. We discuss these results in the context of developing diagnostic competency as well as text-based cases as medium for PBL in teacher education.
