Auf einer Fläche, die mehr als doppelt so groß ist wie die Deutschlands, verteilen sich 46,5 Mio. Menschen, also etwas mehr als halb so viele wie in Deutschland. Knapp 51 % der Bevölkerung sind weiblich und etwas mehr als 49 mänlich, der Ausländeranteil liegt bei etwa 9,6 %. Das Land gehört damit zu den fünf einwohnerstärksten Ländern der EU, in dem 9,1 % ihrer Bevölkerung leben.
