Zusammenfassung
Subnationale Innovationssysteme, allen voran regionale Innovationssysteme, haben nicht nur einen festen Platz als Mitglied in der konzeptionellen Familie der territorialen Innovationsmodelle eingenommen, sie gelten auch als wichtige theoretische Grundlage für regionale Innovationspolitik. In diesem konzeptionellen Beitrag werden sie kritisch gewürdigt, d. h. es werden nicht nur die Stärken, wie der systemische Ansatz, die Mischung aus Fokussierung und Offenheit sowie Pragmatismus und die damit einhergehende Handlungsorientierung, sondern auch die konzeptionellen Schwachstellen, etwa die Erkenntnisgrenzen von strukturellen Ansätzen, und die spezifische Art der Nutzung des Innovationsbegriffs und der territorialen Grenzen, herausgearbeitet. Schließlich wird ein Ausblick gewagt, um Wege aufzuzeigen, wie die Stärken beibehalten oder gar ausgebaut und wie einige der gravierendsten Probleme reduziert werden könnten.
