Zusammenfassung

There are many periods of Berlin’s history that we associate with anarchy and anarchism, and many political and artistic movements. The most recent is the decade immediately following the fall of the Wall, which saw the rise to Berlin’s legendary culture of raves and techno clubs. Yet, Berlin’s “wonderful years of anarchy” of the 1990s are unthinkable without the subcultures of Berlin before unification.

    The allusion to literature as a garden is possibly also a reference to an earlier critique of censored literature in the GDR as a “sozialistische Gartenlaubenliteratur” made by Jurek Becker in 1974 (cf. Walther 1996, S. 86).

    The GEMA stands for Gesellschaft für musikalische Aufführungs- und mechanische Vervielfältigungsrechte, which was the state-authorized collecting society and performance rights organization of West Germany, which was founded in 1933.

    The AWA stands for Anstalt zur Wahrung der Aufführungsrechte. According to Biermann, the AWA took his royalties in hard currency from the GEMA and paid them to Biermann at an exchange rate of 1:1. He did receive however part of his payment in the form of “Valutaschecks” which he could use in the Intershops (Biermann 2016, S. 260–61).
