„And we’re being treated like slave – slave use“

Zusammenfassung

Der Beitrag analysiert auf Basis empirischer (Re)Konstruktionen die Erfahrungen saisonaler Landarbeitsmigrierender in einem von Mehrfachdiskriminierungen geprägten Feld – die Arbeit in Agrarindustrien Süd-Ontarios, Kanada. Im Fokus steht dabei die Frage, wie gegenwärtige Lohnarbeitsverhältnisse über die Bezugnahme auf spezifische Vergangenheiten und ihre Erinnerungen daran durch Landarbeitende erzählt und problematisiert werden. Das ambivalente Deutungsmuster „slavery“ wird hierbei als relevante Rahmung herausgestellt und schließlich als widerständiger sprachlicher Akt interpretiert.

Abstract

Based on empirical data I analyze the experiences of agricultural labor migrants who are employed in a field of multi-discrimination – seasonal work in the agro-industries of southern Ontario, Canada. Focusing on the question how current labor migration relationships are told by those employed as seasonal workers, their first-hand experiences as well the ways how they problematize these are highlighted. Further, I argue that (re)constructing how seasonal workers are referring to a specific memory, which in this case evolves around the ambivalent frame “slavery”, these agricultural workers are developing a way of critique and an act of resistance.
