Zusammenfassung
Nach einem Mathematikstudium wandte sich Barnes (* 1918 Berkshire, † 2010 Cambridge) der Sozialanthropologie zu. Er wurde Schüler von Max Gluckman, dem Begründer der Manchester School of Anthropology, zu der ab Mitte der 50er Jahre auch Elizabeth Bott und Clyde Mitchell hinzustießen, die zusammen mit Barnes zu den Pionieren einer frühen sozialanthroplogischen Netzwerkforschung wurden. Das zentrale Anliegen von Gluckmann und seiner Arbeitsgruppe bestand darin, soziale Strukturen durch das System sozialer Beziehungen in den jeweils untersuchten sozialen Einheiten zu erklären um damit Begrenzungen der damals vorherrschenden funktionalistischen britischen Sozialanthropologie zu überwinden.
