Roger Goulds Buch liefert eine Theorie der Mobilisierung in sozialen Bewegungen basierend auf Netzwerkstrukturen und der Konstruktion kollektiver Identität. Für die Mobilisierung von Protest braucht es eine kollektive Identität der Bewegung. Diese entwickelt sich umso eher, je mehr persönliche Beziehungen zu anderen Mitgliedern des Kollektivs bestehen.
