Der hier besprochene Beitrag erschien im Rahmen eines Special Feature zu Symbolic Interaction and Social Organization im Journal Symbolic Interaction, das von Fine herausgegeben wurde. Er adressiert in erster Linie das Journalpublikum, dem der netzwerktheoretische Ansatz und seine Verwendung im Rahmen des Symbolischen Interaktionismus nähergebracht werden sollen. Die Autoren grenzen sich von der damals gängigen strukturorientierten Netzwerktheorie ab und schließen an die sozialanthropologischen Wurzeln der Netzwerkforschung an.
