Zusammenfassung
Die vorstehenden Ausführungen sollten zeigen, warum es Werbung aus ökonomischer Sicht gibt und welche Funktionen sie hat. Die nun anschließend erörterte Frage lautet: Was bringt es? Dieser Frage kann man sich aus einzel- und aus gesamtwirtschaftlicher Perspektive nähern. Das einzelne Werbung treibende Unternehmen interessiert natürlich, ob das für Marketingkommunikation investierte Geld gut angelegt ist, die Werbung also die gewünschten Effekte erzielt.

Wohlgemerkt soll es hier nicht um Werbewirkung im engeren Sinne gehen. Zur Frage, welche Wirkung Werbung in Zusammenhang mit Wahrnehmung und Erinnerung des Konsumenten hat, gibt es umfassende Literatur.

Ach, was soll’s, hier ist es: „Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half“. Das Zitat wird übrigens fälschlicherweise allen möglichen Prominenten in den Mund gelegt, u. a. Henry Ford.

Dieser Befund hat auch eine gewisse Bedeutung in der Diskussion um Werbeverbote für gesellschaftlich oder politisch unerwünschte Produkte. Werbung erhöht danach nicht die Gesamtnachfrage beispielsweise nach Alkoholika, ein Verbot senkt die Nachfrage also auch nicht.

Zur Erinnerung: Die Preiselastizität gibt an, wie stark die Nachfrage auf Preisänderungen reagiert. Ist ihr Wert null, passiert nach einer Preisänderung hinsichtlich der nachgefragten Menge nichts. Ist der Wert eins, sinkt (steigt) die Nachfrage in genau dem gleichen Maße wie der Preis erhöht (gesenkt) wurde.
