Zusammenfassung

Die Forschungen zur Evolutionsbiologie, Anthropologie, Neurowissenschaft, Psychologie und Narratologie zeichnen ein recht konsistentes Bild des Menschen als einem dynamischen Anpassungsmechanismus in eine Umwelt, nach dem Wahrnehmung, Wohlergehen und Verhalten zum einen kontextual und bis zu einem gewissen Grade zufällig, zum anderen aber auch durch die Erfahrungen, denen man sich aussetzt, in gewissen Grenzen steuerbar sind. Dabei verdichten sich wiederholte Erfahrungen zu Gewohnheiten, die eine Persönlichkeit bilden. In diesem Prozess kann es zu Mismatches kommen, die dem Gelingen des Lebens abträglich sein können. Diese Schlussfolgerungen besitzen ein hohes Maß an Anschlussfähigkeit zu tugendethischen Vorstellungen des gelingenden Lebens, die zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten in unterschiedlichen Kulturen entstanden sind. Auf Basis dieser Erkenntnisse wird ein Erklärungsversuch für die Diskrepanz zwischen dem zumindest in westlichen Gesellschaften gegenwärtig ermöglichten materiellen Überfluss auf der einen und der gleichzeitig von vielen Menschen empfundenen Unbehagen und der Unfähigkeit, diesen Reichtum in erfüllte Leben übersetzten zu können, auf der anderen Seite möglich. Eine solche Ursache wird in den Narrativen der Europäischen Aufklärung verortet.
