Philosophy of Education and the Pragma of Translation

Abstract

When listening to the descriptions that Swetlana Geier, the highly esteemed translator of Dostoevsky into German, gives of her translational work, one cannot help but think that she is talking about education or Bildung. According to Geier, the German “voice of Dostoevsky”, the text to be translated has to be appropriated and grasped in its entirety. The translator has to fully enter into the worldview that the text, the fabric of words, offers.

This text is the (slightly modified and shortened) keynote given at the PESGB 2016 Oxford Conference. I am very grateful to the audience for the rich discussion of the paper. Particularly, I would like to thank Ian Munday for his thought-provoking reply which has drawn me back into this text.

    This term describes that relations of power are inscribed in the perceptual dimensions of the world. The term by Rancière is, in my view, quite adequate for describing Ian’s point of departure for education.

    There has been debate and discussion on this aspect of translation: Bergdahl (2009) and Saito (2009).

    Benjamin takes Hölderlin’s Sophokles translations (Hölderlin 1998) as an example for this. It is really an interesting experience to read these in German: Hölderlin precisely attempted to evoke the original in the translation. The result is a text of constant bewilderment, a text to research the meaning-giving that is going on. Expression and the experience of language form a continuous interplay.
