„I think we have lost a poet in physics and also a man similar to those who are called in the bible ,justs‘.“ So erinnerte Claude Cohen-Tannoudji 1984 an den kurz zuvor verstorbenen Physiker Alfred Kastler (1902-1984), in dessen Labor der spätere Physik-Nobelpreisträger von 1997 seit mehreren Jahrzehnten tätig war. Kastler, seinerseits 1966 mit dem Nobelpreis für Physik ausgezeichnet, ist heute vor allem für seine Beiträge zur Entwicklung der Quantenoptik bekannt.
