DiMaggio/Powell (1983) argumentieren, dass Organisationsfelder im Vorhinein nicht theoretisch bestimmt werden können, sondern erst auf Basis empirischer Erkenntnisse entstehen, durch die sie institutionell definierbar werden (vgl. DiMaggio/Powell 1983: 148). Machado-da-Silva et al. (2006: 48) zeigen jedoch auf, dass bestimmte Strukturen und Mechanismen theoretisch angenommen werden können (und müssen, C.R.), um ein Feld zu bestimmen. Dieses kann anschließend empirisch überprüft werden. Diesem Vorgehen wird hier gefolgt.
