Zusammenfassung
In diesem Beitrag wird zum ersten Mal im „langen“ Längsschnitt die Wahrnehmung eines Konflikts zwischen Alt und Jung zwischen 1978 und 2010 untersucht. Die empirische Analyse eines neuen kumulierten Datensatzes von Querschnittsdaten für die alte und die neue Bundesrepublik bringt Evidenz für zwei zentrale Thesen hervor. Die Strukturspiegelthese beinhaltet, dass die demographische Struktur die Wahrnehmung eines Alterskonflikts beeinflusst. Je älter die Gesellschaft ist, desto stärker wird ein Konflikt zwischen Alt und Jung in der Tendenz wahrgenommen. Die Konstruktionsthese impliziert eine Beziehung zwischen öffentlichen Diskursen und der Wahrnehmung eines Alterskonflikts. Je salienter Altersbeziehungen in politischen Entscheidungsprozessen sind und je mehr über Rentenpolitik in den Zeitungen geschrieben wird, desto stärker ist im Schnitt die Wahrnehmung eines Alterskonflikts. Die Konfliktwahrnehmung hat somit eine dezidiert langfristige objektive demographische Ursache wie auch eine kurzfristige sozial konstruierte Ursache.
