Zusammenfassung

Jede Religion, damit auch der Islam, kann Einfluss auf das Individuum, eine Gruppe und ganze Gesellschaften ausüben. Um die Funktionen von Religion für Fundamentalismus und Totalitarismus zu verstehen, wird Religion hier als sozialwissenschaftliche Kategorie verstanden. So identifizieren Fox und Sandler fünf Funktionen, durch die Religionen Individuen, Gruppen und Gesellschaften beeinflussen: Sie (1) wirken identitätsbildend, (2) sind Glaubenssysteme, die das Verhalten von Individuen und Gruppen beeinflussen, sie (3) produzieren Doktrinen, allumfassende Sichtweisen und Regeln, (4) sie produzieren Legitimität und sie (5) institutionalisieren sich (Fox/Sandler 2005).
