Women Walkers and Female Experiences of the City

  • Catharina LöfflerEmail author

In the English language, expressions and phrases such as “woman of the town,” “streetwalker,” “nightwalker” or “urban woman” point towards a sexualisation of female walking in the city. All these terms are synonyms for “prostitute” and say a lot about women’s roles, reputation and participation in urban public spaces. Eighteenth-century London offered women a range of opportunities to participate in everyday life in the city.
