Zusammenfassung
Die Gründungsgeschichte der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika ist ohne den Kampf um Religionsfreiheit nicht zu verstehen. Von den puritanischen Siedlern, die im 17. Jahrhundert in die neu-englischen Kolonien an der amerikanischen Ostküste emigrierten, bis hin zur großen Migrationsbewegung nach Westen, war der Kampf um Religionsfreiheit stets ein starker Antrieb und ein prägendes Moment in der amerikanischen Geschichte. Allerdings beschränken sich Bedeutung und Interesse, die diesem Phänomen zugeschrieben und entgegengebracht werden, nicht nur auf ein besseres Verständnis der amerikanischen Vergangenheit.
