Zusammenfassung

Der Raumbegriff von Europa hat sich im Laufe der Geschichte ebenso gewandelt wie unter den Bedingungen der europäischen Einigungsprozesse seit der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die „mental map“, mit der die Europäer sich selbst und die Welt, in der die EU steht, sehen, ist die wichtigste Voraussetzung, um nach Grenzziehungen zu fragen und um diese Frage unter verschiedenen äußeren und inneren Bedingungen unterschiedlich zu beantworten. Die Europäische Union wird auch in Zukunft ihren Raumbegriff und ihr Grenzbewusstsein ebenso von Interessen wie von Werten her definieren, das heißt: politisch und nicht allein geografisch oder aufgrund historischer Erfahrungen.
