Zusammenfassung

Der Begriff der europäischen Identität erfuhr in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung nach der Verabschiedung des Vertrags von Maastricht einen enormen Aufschwung. Die Forschungen der vergangenen beiden Jahrzehnte spiegeln die zahlreichen Facetten des Identitätsbegriffs wider, der hineinstrahlt in Untersuchungen über Bürgerschaft, Öffentlichkeit und Nation und sich somit als überaus geeignet für interdisziplinäre Untersuchungen erweist. Besonders aufschlussreich sind dabei sozialpsychologische Forschungen über Gruppenbildung. Die Europäische Union fördert eine stärkere Identifikation mit Hilfe einer Werte- und Symbolstrategie, dennoch zeigen die empirischen Befunde, dass die Stärke der Identifikation mit der EU zwischen den Mitgliedstaaten variiert und zudem von weiteren Faktoren abhängt. Die zukünftige Herausforderung der Europaforschung besteht in einer Zusammenführung der unterschiedlichen Ansätze sowie in einer konsequenteren Verknüpfung von Theorie und Empirie durch verbesserte Hypothesenbildung und -testung.
