Zusammenfassung
Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird die ausländische Standortwahl von Unternehmen untersucht, wobei letztere als Teile einer Unternehmenspopulation verstanden werden. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Fragestellung, welche Auswirkungen das Handeln von Populationsmitgliedern untereinander auf die Internationalisierungsaktivitäten einzelner Unternehmen hat. Die folgende Analyse zeigt, dass komplexe nicht-lineare Wirkungszusammenhänge zwischen den verschiedenen Akteuren bestehen, welche einen pfadabhängigen Internationalisierungsprozess von Unternehmenspopulationen begründen. Dieser begünstigt eine Ballung von Direktinvestitionsbeständen in bestimmten Ländern und kann zu temporär ineffizienten Allokationen von Direktinvestitionsbeständen führen. Andererseits besteht gerade für wenig entwickelte Länder, welche über ein geringes Direktinvestitionsniveau verfügen, die Chance, durch investitionsfördernde Maßnahmen einen Prozess zu initiieren, welcher sich durch einen wechselseitigen selbstverstärkenden Effekt einerseits zwischen ausländischen Unternehmen und andererseits zwischen diesen und den länderspezifischen Determinanten auszeichnet.
