Abstract
In contrast to Schein’s expert abstinence and to the “midwife role” of a coach, this article advocates a diversity of roles on the part of the coach that is tailored to the client’s issues and problems. Already due to pragmatic aspects, this would be a limitation placed on this form of consultation, as many clients expect the coach to provide specialist expertise. But even under normative aspects, this would also be a restriction, as even clearly asymmetric methods can be justified if the subject status of the client is maintained. Symmetry/asymmetry on the one hand and intersubjectivity on the other are, namely, not congruent. It is due to this—as will be shown in a case study—that directive coach roles can also be justified, as long as they do the client justice as a subject.
