Zusammenfassung

Amerikanische Westernserien wie Bonanza (1959–1973) haben lange Zeit zur fernsehgestützten Sozialisation nicht nur von Amerikanern beigetragen. Als eine ‚Familien-Westernserie‘, in der sich die Darstellungskonventionen des Western und der Familien-Sitcom vermischen, verhandelt Bonanza mit den Geschichten um den alleinerziehenden Ben Cartwright und seine Söhne u.a. Konzepte von Vaterschaft, Familie und Gesellschaft. Der Beitrag beleuchtet die Ambivalenzen, die in der Konzeption von Familienkonstellation und Vaterfigur angelegt sind, und deutet diese als Zeichen für Umbrüche in zeitgenössischen amerikanischen Konzepten von Familie und Geschlechterrollen. Bonanza kann damit als Zeitdokument des Wandels von ‚alten‘ (autoritären) zu ‚neuen‘ (liberaleren) Männlichkeits-, Führungsund Erziehungsidealen gelesen werden.
