The chapter aims at a thick description of the socio-technological and socio-economic conditions of a digital media practice commonly referred to as computer game modding. The term modding summarizes various practices of adding and changing contents and structures of existing computer games by amateur programmers and designers.
Many forms of modding serve as proof for the more or less controlled reallocation of agency between the media industries and user communities. Oftentimes these processes are explained by acknowledging the coalescence of production and consumption. The relationship between production and consumption is either described as a top-down usurpation of co-creativity through the industry or as an emancipatory appropriation that fosters bottom-up egalitarian and alternative market structures. But practices like modding account for a far more complex relationship between the two spheres. Participation in computer gaming cultures is intertwined in a relational network that generates moments of power reallocation in which agency becomes visible.
