Zusammenfassung

Zum Anspruch einer Profession gehören die Einheitlichkeit des Verfahrens, die Kontrolle des Prozesses, in dem beruflich gehandelt wird, und seine wissenschaftliche Begründung. Um diesem Anspruch nachzukommen, setzten die Sozialarbeiterinnen zunächst in den USA und dann auch in anderen Ländern nach dem 1. Weltkrieg auf die weitere Profilierung der Methode Casework. Die verbindliche Darstellung, die ihr Mary Richmond gegeben hatte, wurde ab den 1920er Jahren von psychologischen und therapeutischen Techniken abgelöst. Die Personzentrierung des Handelns und die Beziehungsarbeit mit den Klienten rückten in den Mittelpunkt des professionellen Selbstverständnisses.

Neben Casework wurde die Gruppenarbeit lange nicht als zweite Methode anerkannt. Dies geschah erst nach Ergänzung ihrer Ausübung in der Gruppenpädagogik durch gruppentherapeutische Verfahren und die Gruppendynamik. Eine hohe Zeit der Gruppenarbeit waren die Jahrzehnte zwischen 1940 und 1960, als die Methode zur Demokratisierung des gesellschaftlichen Lebens eingesetzt wurde. Danach wurde Gruppenarbeit in Formen solidarischer Problembewältigung gebraucht.

Die ebenfalls ab den 1920er Jahren sich entfaltende Gemeinwesenarbeit hat als dritte klassische Methode der Profession unterschiedlichen sozial- und entwicklungspolitischen Zwecken gedient und setzte ab den 1970er Jahren einen methodischen Kontrapunkt zur Einzelfallhilfe in der Sozialen Arbeit.
