Abstract

To assess the impact of boundary objects on the virtual collaboration process, a framework is required that explains different levels of interaction in this process. The analysed boundary objects (1) influence social interrelations during collaboration and (2) provide the technical infrastructure to realize collaboration. The theoretical stance of Socio-Technical-Systems (STS) theory, following Trist (1951), is taken to cluster boundary objects‘ impact on the social as well as the technical systems in the collaboration.
