Zusammenfassung

Eine der grundlegenden Annahmen der Soziologie ist, das Handeln von Individuen sei nicht allein auf Merkmale der Person, wie z.B. Alter, Bildung oder psychische Dispositionen wie z.B. Aggressivität, zurückzuführen, sondern auch – oder gar vor allem – auf Bedingungen ihrer jeweiligen Umwelt. Die Umwelt stellt einen Kontext dar, der sowohl Optionen (Chancen) als auch Restriktionen für das Handeln aufweist. Einer der am häufigsten untersuchten Kontexte ist das Wohngebiet (neighbourhood). In der sozialwissenschaftlichen Literatur über die generellen Effekte des Wohngebietes auf dessen Bewohner/innen hat sich gezeigt, dass die (Nachbarschafts-)Effekte – verglichen mit den Individualeffekten – sehr niedrig sind (u.a. Brooks-Gunn et al. 1993, Dietz 2002, Durlauf 2005, Galster 2003, 2007, Leventhal & Brooks-Gunn 2000, van Ham et al. 2012).
