Zusammenfassung
Im Jahr 1987 schrieb The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, eines der ältesten Wissenschaftsgesellschaften und unabhängiges Politikforschungsinstitut der USA, eine neue international angelegte Public Policy Studie aus. Entscheidendes Kriterium zur Auswahl eines Projektes war die Relevanz des Themas. Was aber war in Zeiten von Kaltem Krieg, Apartheid und Lateinamerikanischer Befreiungstheologie relevant? Man entschied sich schließlich, das Fundamentalism Project zu fördern, das der Historiker R. Scott Appleby von der Notre Dame University, selbst ausgewiesen für seine interdisziplinäre globale Perspektive auf Religion, Frieden und Konflikt sowie Martin E. Marty, 1952 zum lutherischen Pastor ordiniert und als einschlägig bekannter Experte für Amerikanische Religionsgeschichte des 18. Und 20. Jahrhunderts Professor (jetzt emeritus) für Religionsgeschichte an der Universität Chicago, konzipiert hatten; eine auf sieben Jahre angelegte weltweit und transdisziplinär ausgerichtete empirische Vergleichsstudie zum modernen religiösen Fundamentalismus.

Sein Plädoyer für eine präzisere Definition begründet Casanova folgendermaßen: „Indeed, secularist, uncritical, and unreflexive fundamentalist readings of modernity must call for antimodern fundamentalist reactions. From a feminist or women's liberation perspective, must every religious defense of traditional gender roles appear as fundamentalism, so that fundamentalism can be defined primarily as ‘radical patriarchalism’? […] Given that each of these questions can be answered in the negative, we need more nuanced definitions of religious fundamentalism“ (Casanova 1995, S. 288).
