Zusammenfassung
Der Ansatz Martins ermöglicht es, die Probleme des Determinismus und der Einlinigkeit innerhalb der klassischen Säkularisierungstheorie zu überwinden. Stattdessen rückt eine Vielzahl von historischen Konstellationen und Entwicklungen ins Zentrum des Interesses. Zu den Vorteilen des Ansatzes gehört, Säkularisierungsprozesse, insbesondere für das westliche Europa, nicht zu leugnen, sie aber einer deterministischen Kausalität zu entkleiden und damit in ihrer Vielfalt wahrnehmbar zu machen. Martins Ansatz wurde neuerdings in empirischen Analysen zum Verhältnisses von Religion und Wohlfahrtsstaatsentwicklung in Europa aufgegriffen und hat sich in diesem Forschungsfeld als fruchtbar erwiesen.
