Zusammenfassung
Die Grundlagen der elektro- und magnetooptischen Effekte, auch benannt nach ihren Entdeckern, sind bereits seit mehr als einem Jahrhundert bekannt. Der Pockels- und der Kerr-Effekt kennzeichnen die optischen Eigenschaften bestimmter Kristalle, Flüssigkeiten und Gase im elektrischen Feld, wodurch der Polarisationszustand einer längs der optischen Achse laufenden Lichtwelle beeinflusst wird. Beim Faraday-Effekt verändert ein Magnetfeld ebenfalls die Polarisation einer durchlaufenden Lichtwelle. Die im Medium hervorgerufene Drehung der Polarisationsebene der Lichtwelle wird mit einem nachgeschalteten Analysator und Fotodetektor als entsprechende elektrische oder magnetische Feldstärke angezeigt. In Verbindung mit Lichtwellenleitern bieten die im Nanosekundenbereich ablaufenden optischen Vorgänge gute Voraussetzungen für den Einsatz dieser Sensoren auf Hochspannungspotential. Die technische Realisierung der Pockels- und Faraday-Effekte ist in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten dank der Lösung einer Reihe von Einzelproblemen vorangekommen.
