Dabei bezeichnet \( (m \times n) \) [gesprochen: “m Kreuz n”] die Ordnung der Matrix. Matrizen werden gewöhnlich mit lateinischen Großbuchstaben benannt. Unabhängig von ihrer Ordnung besitzt jede Matrix genau eine Hauptdiagonale, welche alle Komponenten \( a_{ij} \) mit \( i = j \) enthält.
