Aus kognitionswissenschaftlicher Sicht handelt es sich bei der Wahrnehmung um einen basalen kognitiven Prozess, bei dem Informationen aus der Umwelt über sensorische Kanäle aufgenommen werden. Wahrnehmung ist insofern kognitiv, als sie Teil der Informationsverarbeitung ist, und insofern basal, als sie den meisten anderen Prozessen der Informationsverarbeitung vorgelagert ist. Die von unseren Sinnesorganen empfangenen Signale werden zunächst aufbereitet, ehe sie – gegeben hinreichende Aufmerksamkeit – kognitiv weiterverarbeitet werden.
