Zusammenfassung
Encephalitis lethargica is a disease that appeared in acute form between about 1916 and 1926 and in epidemic form no later than 1918. The latter also resulted in the contemporary, related name encephalitis epidemica. The epidemic was gradually forgotten during the 1940s and 1950s.
Translation by Isabell Hermansson, Alan Wildblood (both Berlin) and the author. Many thanks for comments on previous versions of the paper to Silvia Berger (Zürich), Paul Foley (Sydney), Volker Hess (Berlin) and Howard Phillips (Cape Town).
