Abstract
The paper suggests conceiving of self-tracking – especially self-tracking with a focus on emotional phenomena – as specific practice of modern subjects examining themselves (Selbstthematisierung). It presents an analytic reconstruction of various current emotion tracking techniques and positions the phenomenon within latest analyses on the development of the social regulation of feelings by focusing on the implicit concepts of emotion underpinning those tracking techniques. The self-tracking of feelings – similar to other contemporary programs of emotion management (e.g. emotional intelligence) – contributes to generating a whole new understanding of emotions as phenomena that can be mentally chosen, formed, optimized and used for self knowledge, self fulfillment and personal success.
