Zusammenfassung
Mit Publikationen wie dem von Lúcia Nagib, Chris Perriam und Rajinder Kumar Dudrah herausgegebenen Reader Theorizing World Cinema (2012) ist ebenso wie mit Nataša Durovicovás und Kathleen Newmans Sammelband World Cinemas: Transnational Perspectives (2009) in rezenter Zeit eine neue Konjunktur in der Diskussion um „World Cinema“ zu konstatieren. Anknüpfend an diese Debatten, wollen wir World Cinema im Rahmen des vorliegenden Bandes nicht einfach als möglichst inklusive Konzeption differenter National- und Regionalkinematografien begreifen, da ein solcher Ansatz – und sei er, wie bei Geoffrey Nowell-Smith (1996) oder Linda Badley, Barton R. Palmer und Steven Jay Schneider (2010) auch noch so gut gemeint – notwendigerweise den traditionellen Kategorien konventioneller Filmhistoriografien verhaftet bleiben muss, deren enzyklopädischer Impetus jede diskursive Dimension verfehlen muss. Stattdessen soll World Cinema stark gemacht werden als moderierende Einlassung, die Filmlandschaften jenseits des dominanten Paradigmas von „Hollywood“ adressiert und dabei auch das europäische Kino provinzialisiert.
