Zusammenfassung
In diesem Kapitel steht die physikalische Anwendungsrelevanz des architektonischen Programms zur Diskussion, welches Émilie du Châtelet in ihren Institutions physiques entwickelt hat. Die Idee ist denkbar einfach: Man nehme das Prinzip des Widerspruchs und das Prinzip des zureichenden Grundes bzw., im engeren Sinne, das Kausalprinzip, und lege als Fundament beide Prinzipien den Axiomen und Definitionen der Mechanik zugrunde. Aus den Axiomen und Definitionen werden die Grundgesetze der Mechanik formuliert. Stehen diese im Widerspruch zum Kausalprinzip, sind sie als falsch zu verwerfen. Aus diesem Vorgehen rechtfertigte du Châtelet ihre Kritik an der Annahme einer in die Ferne wirkenden, instantanen Gravitation und an der Annahme der Möglichkeit eines Kraftverlustes.
