Abstract

This article addresses the transformation of colleges into universities of applied sciences in China. A major reform initiative designed to close the skill gap; this initiative follows on from a decision made at the third national vocational education conference in 2014, which assumes that Universities of applied science are a key building block for the creation of a modern vocational education system in China. This chapter discusses the rationale behind, and the approaches to, transforming an array of colleges into universities of applied sciences, as well as breakthroughs made and future challenges.
