Abstract
Gary Sick wrote in spring 1987 that Iran had ambitious plans for becoming the super power of the Persian Gulf, and was pursuing this goal via a complex set of international relationships, with boldness, sangfroid and a considerable amount of success. He may have been decades early, but developments in the last ten years point to the foresight of his statement. From the time oil was discovered in Iran, it greatly influenced political, economic and national security policymaking. Historically, Iran’s political economy has been highly dependent on the oil industry.
