Abstract
The period after the Iran–Iraq War was marked by significant dissatisfaction in the population, creating a tense domestic political environment ruled by institutional and factional power play. With the death of Supreme Leader, Ruholla Khomeini, in 1989, a new Supreme Leader was appointed: Ali Khamenei. He lacked the charisma of Khomeini and was faced with a country deeply divided by social and economic antagonisms as well as increasing levels of corruption, particularly in the government elite.
