Abstract
The term multimodality is defined in various ways: Firstly, it refers to multimodal artefacts in which the messages are created by combining a number of semiotic resources, e. g. language, music, sound effects and moving images. Secondly, it is used in linguistics when the analyses of face to face interactions include the spoken text as well as gestures, facial expressions, gaze and proxemics. Thirdly, it refers to processes of perception in which several senses are addressed by the respective stimulus. In this paper it is argued that television commercials in which dramatis personae are employed can be described as multimodal according to the first and the second definitions. For the third definition, the term multisensory is preferred as it corresponds to the branch of multisensory marketing. By analyzing a corpus of German, English (UK) and Spanish television commercials it is shown how and in which part of the TV ads multimodal interaction occurs.
