Zusammenfassung

In modernen demokratischen Gesellschaften mit einem wissenschafts- und technologiebetonten Gesundheitswesen gilt das Recht auf Selbstbestimmung mittlerweile, nach einer über hundert Jahre währenden Auseinandersetzung, als ein notwendiges und weitgehend akzeptiertes moralisches Prinzip. Wer Patient oder Patientin im Gesundheitswesen ist, kann damit rechnen, an Entscheidungen beteiligt und auch bei eher ungewöhnlichen Wünschen ernst genommen zu werden. Die Entwicklung hin zu mehr Patientenselbstbestimmung fand in Deutschland im Patientenrechtegesetz von 2013 einen wichtigen Abschluss.
