Zusammenfassung

Jane Margaret Jacobs ist eine australisch-britische Kultur- und Stadtgeographin, die sich angesichts ihrer Namensverwandtschaft mit der großen U. S.-amerikanischen Stadtkritikerin selbst als Expertin im Auflösen von Mehrdeutigkeiten bezeichnet und als geübt darin, ›die Andere‹ zu sein (Jacobs 1996: xiii). Man kann erahnen, wie sehr die Verwechslungen und daran anschließenden Aufklärungen mit den damit einhergehenden Enttäuschungen beim Gegenüber ob des fehlgeschlagenen (Wieder-)Erkennens zu einem regelmäßigen Bestandteil ihres Lebens wurden. Prägender für ihre Arbeit und ihr Denken ist aber sicher die besondere Mischung aus Zentrum und Peripherie, die sie mit ihren biographischen Stationen in Adelaide, London, Melbourne, Edinburgh und schließlich Singapur vollzogen hat.
