976 Seiten Bericht. Eine große Frage.“

„It was actually a study of more than 500 years of global empires […], but I don't think many people read more than the final chapter on the US and the USSR“ (Paul Kennedy, zit. nach Crace 2008). Vgl. auch knapp Boden (1988) und Figes (1989, S. 70), der von einem „literary monument of the Angst of our American age“ spricht. Woodruff (1989, S. 719) betont, dass nur „few books […] as timely as this one“ seien.

- 10.
Vgl. Kennedy (1987, S. XXI-XXII): „[T]he evidence of the past is almost always too varied to allow for 'hard' scientific conclusions.“
- 11.
Vgl. exemplarisch: Es sei „based upon the plausible assumption that these broad trends of the past five centuries are likely to continue“ (Kennedy 1987, S. 439–440). Und an gleicher Stelle: „In sum, without the intervention of an act of God, or a disastrous nuclear conflagration, there will continue to be a dynamic of world power, essentially driven by technological and economic change“ (Kennedy 1987, S. 440).

Vgl. Kennedy (1987, S. 274): Ausgaben in Mrd. US-$: 57,7 (Alliierte) zu 24,7 (Mittelmächte); mobilisierte Truppen in Mio.: 40,7 (Alliierte) zu 25,1 (Mittelmächte). Konkludierend: „What was enjoyed by one side, particularly after 1917, was a marked superiority in productive forces. As in earlier, lengthy coalition wars, that factor eventually turned out to be decisive“ (Kennedy 1987, S. 274).
- 16.
The United States had definitely become a Great Power. But it was not part of the Great Power system“ (Kennedy 1987, S. 248).
- 17.
Vgl. pointiert Crace (2008): „Two words changed Paul Kennedy’s life. That they were just two words in a book of some 150,000, and that the whole phrase was three words long, was neither here nor there. No one was that interested in the qualifying adjective 'relative' when the other two words were 'US' and 'decline'.“
- 18.
I got thousands of requests for interviews, masses of hate mail and some just weird mail, blaming everything from the Jesuits to sodomy […]. At first I tried to defend my arguments intellectually, and to point out I had been quoted out of context. But then I realised I would drive myself nuts doing this […]. I just decided to let people take whatever they wanted from the book.“
- 19.
Vgl. Huntington (1988/89, S. 84): „In short, if ‘hegemony’ means having 40 % or more of world economic activity […], American hegemony disappeared long ago. If hegemony means producing 20–25 % of the worlds product and twice as much as any other individual country, American hegemony looks quite secure.“
- 20.
- 21.
Deutlich Immanuel Wallerstein (Giddens et al. 1989, S. 336–337): „What we have then is an extraordinary harnessing of economic materialism in advocacy of a Whig interpretation of history. […] The problem, when done in a scholarly tome, is that it requires tying together three variables: world military dominance as the dependent variable, national military power as the intervening variable, and economic strength as the independent variable. […] The outcome is an excellent presentation of the intervening variable […], a not always clear picture of the dependent variable […], and no real discussion of the independent variable.“
- 22.
- 23.
Zusammenfassend: „The argument in this book has been that there exists a dynamic for change, driven chiefly by economic and technological development, which then impact upon social structures, political systems, military power, and the position of individual states and empires. […] The second major argument of this book has been that this uneven pace of economic growth has had crucial long-term impacts upon the relative military power and strategical position of the members of the state system“ (Kennedy 1987, S. 439).
- 24.
- 27.
Giddens nimmt hier jedoch lediglich auf die USA-These Bezug: „The USA may be declining relative to other nations, but has forged a system of global alliances on a military level unparalleled in previous history. It is unlikely that its relative economic decline will fit snugly into earlier patterns of the rise and fall of nations“ (1989, S. 331). Ähnlich auch Woodruff (1989, S. 721).
