Synthetic Automatic Test Systems allow for coverage of a dedicated number of required measurements with a minimum of redundant hardware components. Chapter 1 introduces history and fundamental idea of synthetic instruments. Block diagrams of synthetic and traditional instruments are shown and critical millimeter-wave components for synthetic automatic test systems are identified. Within the scope of this work, innovative ultrawideband components and modules for synthetic instruments are developed. All designs are based on commercially available materials and technologies and are also interesting for usage within traditional instruments.
