Bildung in transnationalen Räumen

Abstract

The twenty-first century has witnessed increased multinational developments and cross-border expansions of higher education institutions. This global trend can take different forms, such as research sites, outreach offices and branch campuses. Such activities are carried out in so-called transnational spaces. This paper is concerned with the German-Turkish higher education transnational space, focusing on a unique example of the only Turkish university branch campus in Germany: Bahçeşehir University (BAU) Berlin Campus, founded in 2012.

Notes

  1. 1.

Knight mentions the third phase or generation—the emergence of education hubs, such as Korea, Bhutan (2013:11). This phenomenon will not be under consideration here.

  2. 2.

These universities can be private (i.e. German University Cairo) or state universities (i.e. German Jordanian University); in any case, they are national universities and fall under local jurisdiction. The most recent foundation is the Turkish-German University, starting its academic programs in 2013 and officially opened in May 2014. The opening of the German-Russian University in Kazan followed in September 2014. This type of foreign-backed universities is of special relevance for Germany’s higher educational export.
