Abstract

The growing number of Muslim children in Austria is a particular challenge for the Austrian education system. Quite often children with a migrant background – especially Muslim children and youth – are either excluded or they isolate themselves. Such experiences make it difficult for these children to identify with the norms and values of the country in which they live. Often teachers are overwhelmed because they are not sufficiently familiar with the children’s cultural and religious backgrounds. To avoid potential disadvantages, many parents choose Islamic private schools for their children, exacerbating the children’s isolation from the larger society, and their access to the pluralistic and democratic values of the indigenous population.
